"Chang chok", inscription ritual, is a ritual performed
for dead persons. It is a ceremony of transferring the
consciousness of the dead to a higher place through
specific vajrayana practice of some deities. It has
two major parts: purification and transference. The
puja will end with various aspiration prayers
including the well known Five Major Aspiration
Prayers.
Benefits of the Rituals
The rituals draw upon the pure bodhichitta of
Vajrasattva, which forms a positive force in
purifying negative karmic obstructions, satisfying
the wishes and thus takes away the bounds of
attachments of the dead, helping them to reach
the pure land.
The main aspiration prayer of Vajrasattva is to
cut through all terrible karmic obstructions. The
essence of Vajrasattva is the indestructible
bodhichitta. Vajrasattva signifies the pure
bodhichitta of all the Buddhas, transcending
craving, hatred, ignorance, jealousy, and pride.
This also suggests that the pure side, the nature
of obscurations itself is enlightenment.
Realizing this, one can reach the ultimate
resultant state of enlightened beings.
